Following nearly seven years of service as in-house counsel with Solutia, Inc. and Anheuser-Busch Companies, Inc., James W. Mathis has returned to private practice with The Stolar Partnership LLP as a partner.

James, an Order of the Coif graduate of Washington University School of Law, initially joined The Stolar Partnership in 1998, the year of his law school graduation. Having worked at the firm as a Summer Associate, he joined the Corporate Practice Group and gained experience with some of the firm’s larger corporate clients.
In 2003, with five years of experience in private practice, James left the firm to serve as corporate counsel for Solutia, Inc., managing a variety of legal matters relating to the company’s Chapter 11 filing, divestitures, procurement, and real estate. In 2004, James was recruited to Anheuser-Busch Companies, Inc. to serve as Associate General Counsel in its Corporate and Commercial Law Group. While at Anheuser-Busch, James advised senior management on a variety of complex commercial matters and served as the lead attorney for the negotiation of entertainment and advertising matters. James also led complex multi-million dollar acquisitions for the company and negotiated billions of dollars in long-term supply agreements.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as in-house counsel, but am relishing the challenge of private practice,” said James. “The perspective I gained while working for two of St. Louis’ preeminent companies and the perspective having been both client and practitioner will enhance my law practice and benefit the Firm’s clients.”
“James is an outstanding lawyer with a limitless future,” said David Jay Krauss, a member of the Firm’s Leadership Committee and fellow corporate attorney. “We are thrilled to welcome him back to the Firm and look forward to expanding our client service offerings with the addition of his vast transactional expertise.”
The Stolar Partnership LLP is a business law firm with several major areas of practice: Business and Tax Law; Litigation; Real Estate; Intellectual Property; Estate Planning; Nonprofit Organizations; and Public Finance.
